Also, bear in mind that I initially installed from SD, but that this
time frame roughly (I didn't actually time it or anything) held true
for first boot after I flashed from SD as well.

Depending on the details (I didn't investigate thoroughly) multiple
reboots may be required (I just assumed that it was freezing until the
start screen magically started working). However, I think the only one
reboot is actually required (further reboots didn't seem to speed the
process).
