You can easily try and test new images via microSD.

I don't know, but I know that over past four years there were some
bugs being found and fixed - also SMS related ones. And I'm not sure,
but SHR-testing from 2010 may contain old frameworkd implementation
which got completely replaced few years ago and is not supported
anymore. New fsogsmd, for instance, replaced the SMS PDU parser due to
older, "in-house" solution being error-prone and hard to maintain. I'd
strongly recommend the upgrade.

Also, have you updated the firmware of GSM modem to moko11? It has fix
for something that sounds related (although there are incoming calls
instead of messages mentioned):
