TAPOL ASKES SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR TO INTERVENE IN ACEH

TAPOL, the Indonesia Human Rights Campaign has written to the UN Special
Rapporteur for Internally Displaced People to intervene to help tens of
thousands of Acehnese who have fled their villages in the past few weeks.

In a letter to Mr Francis Deng, Carmel Budiardjo of TAPOL said that there
was a humanitarian problem of grave proportions in Aceh 'as sickness is
rife, clean water and food is in short supply and accommodation with
appropriate sanitation is not available'.

She said that the problem 'stems from the heavy-handed practices of the
special troops operating in many parts of a province where the population is
still traumatised by their experiences of DOM since 1989.'

She said there was a need for international intervention in order to draw
attention to the problem and seek a change in the circumstances which have
caused the exodus, that is to say, an end to the military operations and the
related terror.

In conclusion, she asked the Special Rapporteur to initiate an investigation
of the problem of IDPs in Aceh with a view to organising intervention to
assist these victims of military terror.
