approach of SSL/TLS and leave the need for TCP kernel hacking alone ?

I don't understand your line of argument. If vendor X is providing
support of AO on his equipment what is a problem to provide
downloadable linux kernel module to be able to establish such session
end to end ?
this may come as a shock, but a linux kernel module does not work well
on unix, solaris, ...
