   This is like asking what's the best editor.  They all set out to solve
different problems.  Having AIX experience though, I'd suggest you use
debian or redhat or any of the distributions that come with lots of
packages and will yell at you when you try to install something that
requires something else.  I could lend you any of the latest cd's to 
try.  As for books, I have some basic using linux/unix books you could
keep for as long as you need them.  If you want them i'll bring them to
cs class tomorrow.  
   Also, check in your /usr/doc directory for documentation your distro
may have installed, and check out http://www.linux-howto.com and of 
course, all you really need to know are in the man pages.
