Sorry to post non-linux triviata, but there is nothing worse than an
incorrect correction. There is no such language as "Chinese", as far as I
know. There is Mandarin (the "official" Chinese language), Cantonese,
Hokkienese, and several others. The Taiwanese speak, *ahem* Taiwanese,
which is similar to Hokkienese. These are separate languages, not
dialects.
There are also several versions of the pictographic written language, as
pointed out by someone else.
