I was not very impressed with WordPerfect8. The installation was easy. When opening
Office97
documents it prompts for conversion, but the conversion didn't work very well, many
parts of the
text were screwed up and unreadable, formatting destroyed. WP doesn't seem able to
handle
text very well, I can't even select a new font from the pulldown, I click the pulldown
arrow, the pulldown draws then destroys, I click and hold, I get nothing.
I didn't bother trying to get WP to open Powerpoint or Excel stuff, from what I've
read it claims
to be just a word processor, not a suite like StarOffice. Some say that is better
because it
is faster and less bloat, but StarOffice loads plenty fast for me and definitely
handles
Office imports better.
One major problem I'm having with StarOffice5.0 is that I can ONLY run the program as
root, which is a bad bad thing. When the soffice init script is run as a user a
StarOffice
screen comes up and "verifies" and "fixes" my StarOffice installation, whatever that
means.
As root I chowned and chgrped the whole install tree to my user and it still didn't
work ( I was
thinking maybe it needed write perms for scratch or something). I don't know what to
do next
and am not satisfied with having to su everytime I want to play with it.
Anyone had a similar problem? and fixed it?
