Okay. I feel like I'm going crazy. I've installed RedHat 5.2 on three
PCs recently (two via FTP and one from the CD). Just this week, I did
another install from CD. Everything seemed to go fine. I logged in as
root to set up a user account. I was going to use RedHat's configuration
tool. I started up X, and the screen looks much different. There's a
weird little tool bar down at the bottom which wasn't there on the other
three installs. Where did *that* come from? Does anyone know whether the
RedHat install looks for updates over the Internet or something?
The reason it bugs me is that this machine has identical video hardware to
one of the others on which I installed RedHat Linux. I used the same
XF86Config file for both machines. The previous machine was fine. On
this machine (with the new, different-looking desktop), X hangs within
about a minute. It actually hangs so badly that I can't even kill the X
server with CTL+ALT+BKSPC. Same install CDs. Same XF86Config files.
Different results. Now, it's possible that the hanging and the new
desktop are unrelated, but it still bugs me that 3 installs look identical
while the fourth looks different.
