there's been a change in the kernel such that the old (version <1) dhcpcd
will not work with a >2.1.xy (not sure for what values of xy, but suffice
it to say "for awhile now) or 2.2 kernel. get info on the new dhcpcd off
of freshmeat.
redhat 5.2 still ships with the old one, debian probably does not since they
were the active force in figuring out why it stopped working (a bugfix in
the kernel regarding standards-conformant use of the 0.0.0.0 ip address)
