hi all.
i want to hack something out that will play an audio file when
i move my mouse after being absent for a long time. the audio
file will be a greeting of sorts, synthesized to be something close
to either HAL or SAL from the 2001 and 2010 books.
after i get this going i could add some logic and make it say stuff
like "good evening mr. carlile, how may i serve you?" or "good
morning mr. carlile, looks like there is rain in the forecast."
you'd just need to look at the time and use a little weather script
i wrote to get the two examples above.
the only trick is getting it to play when you return to your computer.
i thought about hacking something into xscreensaver that could do
it, but i don't know x programming very well. perhaps i can get
pointer information somewhere? like when the pointer moves, and
it's been idle for >= 4 hrs, do some logic to find the right audio file,
then play it?
it's a useless little idea, but i think it would be really cool, especially
if you worked on it and made it do some real thinking before talking.

in un-related news, i distributed roughly 20 siglinux flyers around
campus today, i posted a _lot_ in the Business school...=)
i'm going to try to get some to you CS people so you can put them
up in the CS hotspots, i don't know much about the CS buildings.
