Mostly, it's been my experience that when X locks up, it takes the entire
system with it. If you're *LUCKY* you might be able to telnet in from another
box and kill X, or if that doesn't work, at least shut down cleanly,
but I've certainly had XFree86 take down my system completely. And if
his reset switch isn't working, that's a pretty good indication that
something has *really* gone wrong.
of course, YMMV. ^_^
Anyway, about the virge, it looks from the XF86 documentation, that
the S3V server is *supposed* to be more stable than the SVGA one, but
from what I rember the virge/gx2 only works under the SVGA server.
my experience with the virge support in XF86 hasn't been all that
good, but I suspect that has much to do with the fact that I inherited
a rather old card that'd spent much of it's life in a high school in a
mock up to show what the insides of a computer look like. Being gawked
at and fondled by teenagers *can't* be good for a video card, ne? It
works fine in text mode though (even with the ridiculously sized text
mode I run), which is all I really need it to do at the moment.
anyway, my only real advice is to make sure you're running the latest
XF86 (3.3.3.1, right?). barring that, I dunno. You could try the FBcon
stuff in the 2.2.x kernels, but I really have no idea if that works
with the virge chipsets. You might try one of the commercial X
servers, if they have support.
