Edit /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup or Xsetup_0 and comment out the xconsole command.

Apparently kdm uses the color schemes/preferences of root (or the user
running kdm), so if you login as root and change the background and colors
to whatever you want, kdm will use these. It seems this is the only way
to change it as it ignores Xresources and kdmconfig has no options related
to color schemes.
