Wiping out conf.modules, and doing this, seemed to work. Still no sound.
Reading through the documentation about it, it actually recommended quite a
few more insmod lines, including "insmod sound". In trying to run that, I
get the many errors along the lines of "unresolved symbol in <whatever>". By
doing other insmod commands to load the other drivers, it cuts down the # of
errors insmod sound spits out, but it still chokes on 3 or so points.
However, sticking to editing conf.modules, things seem to load correctly at
bootup.

I completely reinstalled, tried the same things, no luck. post-reinstall,
tried downloading the newest sndconfig and all its dependencies, but I still
get "error in loading shared libraries: undefined symbol: __bzero" and I
think a mention to libnewt.so.o.40, which is there and freshly installed
from newt-40-4.

I'm about to give up until redhat releases an official sndconfig update
which hopefully wont have these problems, or some miracle happens.

Quick rant after all this:

I was annoyed with linux after installing it for the first time (Redhat
5.1). X would freeze when I tried to load it. I spent probably a full day
chasing down a billion leads I'd read about or people had tipped me off to,
only to find out the problem was simply with my mouse. Redhats Xconfigurator
(in 5.1) did not have a choice for my Logitech Plus mouse, and it turned out
all the other Logitech choices they had also didn't work. xfree86config had
an extra choice, "Microsoft Intellipoint", and this fortunately worked. I
was pleased to see in 5.2, this and a few other minor problems I had were
corrected, but this is getting sound to work nightmare has fanned old fires.
I've spent 2-3 full evenings playing with this, done everything it seems,
and even when the modules report loading correctly, still no sound. It
should not be anywhere near this difficult.

Anyway, thanks for the help --

Tom
