FWIW, I remember this problem coming up in a debate over Perl v.
Python. Someone was complaining that the syntax was really clumsy
(when you try to subscript, you got one element instead of the sub-array,
or something). If this is the problem you are having, I know it's
answered in the Perl/Python section of python.org... :-)
I really don't use perl too often myself--I usually get by with
either (ba)sh or python. I was really put off by the camel book.
