this is not exactly precise. if you read the man page on ps
%CPU shows the cputime/realtime percentage. It will not
add up to 100% unless you are lucky. It is time used
divided by the time the process has been running.
if x11amp has been up for 10 days without doing anything, then you play
mp3's for an hour. the %CPU is still going to be really low..why don't you
try 'vmstat 2'
