I think he's asking (and if not it's the next question anyway):

what does USB support _mean_ for Linux.  Yes the kernel has "support"
which can only mean the device driver.  Different peripherals may need
other support in the applications.

I don't know the status of that support, but I'd like to -- I'm very
interested in USB cameras and scanners.
