As I have said numerous times before ... security is in the hand of the
administrator. I won't talk about any 'stock installations', because
in all general respects, they all suck. They are meant for maximum capability
and not maximum security. 

I have made solaris boxes look like a bank vault, and linux boxes as well.
Let's not go into the 'which os is more secure', because frankly, none of
them are. It's the administrators obligation to patch/remove unnecessary
services/remove extraneous suids. 

As so far as monitoring machines .. the firewall I run at home is a combination
of linux ipmasq, tcp/udplog, traceroute detection, and abacus sentry. If
you're not familiar with any of these products, let me know and I can fill
you in  .... or wait and peg people at the meeting ;)
