No need to trick it in any way -- this is the accepted way of putting an X
server on your system.  Try changing where /etc/X11/X points (it's a
symbolic link).

So you go get your XF86_3d or whatever and put it in /usr/X11R6/bin/ and
then link /etc/X11/X to it and it shoudl be the one used when you type 'X'
(through the magic of Xwrapper).
