This subject comes up so often it should probably be in the FAQ already
but it isn't. Anyways, I think the general consensus is that ext2
filesystems don't usually need to be defragged. However, obviously some
people disagree as a defrag utility called e2defrag exists and should be
available at most Linux software archives.
A good explanation of why defragging isn't as essential for most unix
filesystems can be found is at:
