If you had set the default runlevel to 5, then it wouldn't give you a
command line login prompt. Also make sure you have a .Xclients or
.Xsession with the execute bits set in your home dir that calls the
window manager you want to use.

I believe you use the kde command to start it, no the startkde script.
Haven't used it in a while though so I'm not sure.
