have you tried 'modprobe aic7xxx'?
If that doesn't work, go into your kernel config and turn on the Adaptec
as a module, when you exit do a 'make modules modules_install'
then try the modprobe again.
If you're watching your console, you should see the jaz drive get probed
and assigned a device such as /dev/sda.
If the jaz drive is like the zip, the FAT filesystem is on partition 4.
