   Slackware uses libc5 and redhat 5.1 probably uses libc6.  If you tried
upgrading your slackware setup to redhat, after it switched your libs I
couldn't imagine much working besides the kernel.  Anything dynamically
linked to libc5 will die a horrible death.  This may be the cause of your
troubles.  I would suggess tar'ing up all your important files somewhere
and reformatting.
