You probably want to look at a program called fetchmail. It downloads
your mail from various accounts and puts it on your local spool.

Look at the faq. There's a decent description of how to set it up to
tunnel the pop connections over ssh, IIRC.

There's also a mini-howto in the LDP, but I didn't find it very
useful. Your mileage may vary, though.
