   Is X using that much memory?  Or just the overall system (as shown by
free for example)?  Because if you are not using much memory, Linux will
be happy to use what is idle to do disk cache and other things with.  For
instance, load up emacs.  It might be slow and horrid, but the second
time, it may be really fast.  And if a user program needs some more
memory, Linux will cut back and free some of the extra cache and other
things it was using.  
   Try doing ls -alR / in one window and watch the memory usage go up in
another, and stay after it finished.
