try looking at the release notes / docs for Xfree86 (is it
www.xfree.org? can't recall) to see if the card is supported by the
latest release of X. My ATI Xpert 98 works fine (albeit with no 3d that I
know of). If all else fails, I think you could try the generic mach64
driver if the newest generation of ATI cards still uses the mach64 chipset
(the 98 still does). If that doesn't work and X 3.3.3.1 (is that the
latest release? I think so, but I'm not sure) doesn't support it, I guess
just wait a bit until X 3.4 comes out. They seem to be pretty good about
catching new ATI cards.
One silly solution occured to me: :^) go buy a used 2 meg pci card
for about $15-20 and plug that in when ever you want to run X... heh heh
