make sure your /etc/resolv.conf file is world readable
(chmod a+r /etc/resolv.conf as root)
that's probably the source of your woes.
if not, write back and give us some more details about your setup
(distribution, version, command you use to start connection,
if nslookup works, verify that root can resolve things, etc)
