I realize that this isn't directly Linux-related, but I figured some
of you would be able to help me with this one. Feel free to reply to
me specifically if you don't think the list would be interested.
I bought a Pentium Pro back in '97. While the processor is
fast enough for my needs, I'm running into a few minor issues. For one
thing, this case is absolutely horrible. Getting it apart is hellish;
putting it back together is even worse. I'd like to get a much better
case, something which is easily disassembled.
Also, I'm completely out of PCI slots, though I have 1 or 2 ISA slots
available. I just purchased a DVD drive with an MPEG decoder card, and
I've removed my TV tuner to make room. (I had to choose between the
video card, ethernet, TV tuner and SBLive. Not a very easy decision.)
So, I'd like to have more PCI slots and fewer ISA's, since the only
ISA hardware I have is old and should probably be upgraded/removed
anyway.
So, as a consequence of these issues, I'm considering building my next
computer. I could buy one on-line, but I've invested so much in
hardware for this one, that it'd be fairly pointless to buy a new one
when half of it isn't even a year old. I'd also like a faster
processor, maybe a Pentium II or III, or maybe a K6/K7 to save money.
So, I have a few questions. What would I need to buy to build a new
computer with my existing hardware? Would a new case, motherboard and
processor be sufficient? Could I then just rip out the old hardware
and install it into the new case? Assuming this is the case (No pun
intended), is there somewhere where I can locally buy just a case and
motherboard? Do any of these places feature on-line shopping? Even
though I'm local, I'm in a job that requires me to be around all day,
so I wouldn't be able to shop around. Are there any additional issues
which I need to consider? How much should I anticipate spending for a
new case, motherboard and processor? Would choosing AMD be worth the
savings, or is there much savings at all in that choice? How difficult
would assembly be, or would the store be able to install the
motherboard into the case, allowing me to just gut the other box and
start plugging things in? And, finally, are there any good web guides
which would be able to answer my questions, so I don't necessarily
need to spam you folks with them? :)
Thanks for your time.
