hi john,
yes indeed, i am very aware of what sshd is and have tried initializing it
in many different ways.  after using sshd -d (thanks chris) sshd seemed to
start just fine and i was able to ssh to it.  from then on i did not need to
use debugging and it would start just fine.
it's in my rc.local now and i have kind of washed my hands of it.
