I have managed to get XFree86 running on with the latest release. I
can post my XF86Config file if anyone wants to see it. I can get
either 1024x768 24 bit or 800x600.

The sound works, IF (and this is a big, annoying if) you use loadlin
out of windows instead of lilo. Windows/Dos initializes the sound
card in a sound blaster compatible mode, and then when linux starts
from loadlin, the card is already initialized.

True. PCMCIA cards work OK, however.
Anyone with an I700, should take a look at
http://www.eecs.umich.edu/~steveh/inspiron/
He keeps his info pretty up to date.
