i would not expect the shipped kernel to be enabled with smp
support. snag 2.2.12 and compile it with smp, i think that should
be all you need...
i asked fool about this recently and i seem to recall him saying
something about setting some value to 1 in a Makefile somewhere,
but maybe that is all the xconfig script does...
