I'm guessing that it would be quite simple to fix pty-redir - just look at the source for xterm that's been patched to use the Unix98 ptys and do the same thing. That, and the docs in Configure.help should be all you need. Well, that and some C knowledge. But you shouldn't have to do that. As I understand it, you can use Unix98 and classic ptys on the same box at the same time. You probably just need to make sure you have the old style pty files in your /dev directory. I've done this PPP through ssh thing, and it works.
