I was reinstalling RH6 just now, as the old install got
hosed a few days ago when I upgraded my system. The install process
goes smoothly up until the point that I'm configuring X11. It dies there.
"OK, no big suprise, I'm using a TNT card now so maybe it's just not
getting something." So then I log in, and everything text-based _seems_
to be working fine. I thought "Hey, I'll try XF86Setup, just for kicks.".
It dies, saying it can't find Xaw3d.so.1. Odd, as I don't recall ever
getting that error before. greping through /usr/lib reveals that, as far
as I can tell, no X11-related libs got istalled, even though I told the
installer to do so. Grumbling, I mounted the cdrom and tracked down the
appropriate rpms. Here's where it gets _really_ bizzare. Rpm seg faults
and core dumps every time I try to use it. Wtf? But I never find any
actual core files anywhere.
        Could this have something to do with the system hardware upgrades
I just did?[1] I seem to recall the RH6 install I did previously going
perfectly... I went from a p233mmx to a celeron 300a, do you suppose that
somehow, in some weird way, that I lost some form of binary compatibility
that affects things like X11/X11 libs/rpm? This has me totally confused.
I think for now I'm just going to wipe the HD again and attempt to burn an
ISO of the new rh 6.1 cd, hoping that version will like my hardware
better.  ?:|

[1]  Total changes:

        a) processor- p233mmx->cel300a(450mhz stable for 72+ hours
straight in windows, heck the cpu fan didn't even need to turn on)
        b) video card- ATI Xpert98 -> Creative Labs Graphics Blaster TNT,
Quantum3D Obsidian2 X-24 (2 voodoo2s on one board in SLI, basically)
        c) memory- 64mb -> 128mb sdram
        d) motherboard -> generic super7 atx board -> Abit BH6 BX board

        Thanks in advance for any ideas or suggestions! :)
        mike
