My problem turned out to be stupidly easy. I had been pinging with a numeric address, say 128.83.185.42 but whenever I tried to go anywhere with Netscape I was putting in an alphabetic address ie. www.cnn.com. The problem was that I didn't have a nameserver entered into my network settings. Like 128.83.185.40 (and 41.) I hope that is all that's wrong with yours too.
