This still boggles my mind, but I seem to have found a solution.  In
the bios, if the boot order is not CDROM,C, A then /dev/hdc is not
found.  I've tried permutations of auto-detecting the cdrom through
the IDE setup (which doesn't affect anything) and adjusting the
IDE-wait on boot.  For some reason, the only time it detects /dev/hdc
is when the boot order is CDROM first (like it was when I did the
setup).  It works but I find it kinda weird.  Hardware is a Celeron
366->567 and an Abit BX2.0.
