I finally managed to get my new box working after several days of work
in a computer lab across campus, trying to grab the binaries which I
needed to fix my filesystem.

Anyhow, I'm about to hook up my 27 gig drive which should remove the
need for e2compr on my current filesystem. Since I have a huge amount
of space to play with though, I'd really like to toy with other
operating systems; I'm curious about how the Hurd works. But, I'm
afraid to give it a partition on my drive, only to discover that I
don't like it, it lacks features that I'd need, etc.

I've tried Partition Magic before, and thought it was
great. Unfortunately, the version I have is ancient and doesn't handle
Linux partitions at all; it recognizes them, but it could never resize
them, which is what I hear the new version does. So, I'm debating
whether or not to toss yet more money aside for the new version. I'm
curious if any open source alternatives to Partition Magic exist? I've
used fips, but AFAIK that only splits dos partitions. I also once used
a program called presizer, but I don't think it worked on ext2
partitions. Are there any safe open source programs for this, or
should I just pay the $30-40 (at least, I think that's what the old
version cost me) for the newer version? Furthermore, has anyone tried
it? I hear the newer version includes a non-GUI app; is this true?
