I have a Hauppage card. I haven't used it for a while, but I had
few problems using it on linux - even before the bt848 drivers made it
into the kernel. At one point, there were problems with certain video
cards (Actually, to brag for a second, that is how I got my 1 line of
code in the linux kernel - there was a bug regarding video card
identification off certain PCI cards that I sent a fix for) but I
think it all runs flawlessly now.
As an interesting application, I actually used the video card to
capture audio from some public access TV shows and broadcasted that as
realaudio to the internet. Originally I would lug a laptop down
to the ACAC studios and stream to my home machine via the ACAC ISDN
connection. (and then out to the net from there) But suddenly it
dawned on me that it would be MUCH easier to just grab the audio
from the TV.
My "some day when I have time" project would be to have a system
that could broadcast what my home tv is showing over the internet. I
don't want to let others see - I just want to be able to, for example,
watch an occassional show when I am working late.
It would also be nice to be able to occassionally broadcast things
for friends. One application is video games. Sometimes I want to
show someone else a technique on a video game. I share good games
with some friends in japan. So, I have my playstation hooked up to a
VCR and from time to time I will send them a tape or they will send me
a tape. It would be nice if I could record the video straight to disk
to let them access on the web. (this is probably doable - but I don't
know how) What would be even cooler is to stream the game straight to
their computer and let them watch as I play. (or let me watch as they
play)
