actually, I have solved the problem!!!! since NT recognized the entire disk,
I created the "linux" partitions (swap, /tmp, /var, /home, and /) using NT's
disk administrator. no need to format. then I booted into linux and linux
was able to recognize each partition as FAT-16, so I changed the partition
IDs to 82 for swap and 83 for linux native on the other ones. linux
successfully installed from this point. i was able to put lilo on the MBR
(eventhough the number of cylinders of my disk was > 1024) and I had no
problems booting into NT or linux!!!

;)

PS: i wanted to post this to the entire linux group since I thought it could
be useful for some people out there trying to install NT and linux on a
large HD w/o sacrificing any space above 8GB.

sorry, it's commercial. if you are willing to use lilo for boot management
though, i think you can use dos fdisk to cut the FAT 16 boot partition and
NT disk admin to cut the rest of the NT partitions. then you can use disk
druid to cut the linux partitions if i'm not mistaken. can't remember if
disk druid can see beyong the first 1024 cylinders. sorry.
