well, im new at linux...
If im telling crap -- dont blame me, im not a proffesional!
but i can say one thing - sys comm gave me lots of headaches in the past.

i actually had the same problem with overlapping partitions, the thing is
that sys comm sometimes reveal some bad error when there is complex
partition system(especially it happens with FAT32) and it changes your
partition table, so you may get overlapping, or just crapped partitions...

i wouldnot recommend using sys comm, im not only the person having that
problem.

Now it may be difficult to fix the system, i know -- norton disk doctor
might do that, but if you do (i guess they had windows on that machine)
just try to use Lilo...

I dont know much about LILO, but mine didnt want to install when the
active partition was different that with linux. So make it active in
cfdisk or fdisk.
