Thanks guys, it worked. 7 replies in 10 minutes- I like that. 
 
Can somebody tell me what the error:  unknown device: doesn't exist  means? I get that for eth0. I have a Netgear FA310TX NIC, uses the tulip driver which I'm going to recompile- that's why I needed access to the dos partition. Netgear's Linux driver was on a PC-formatted floppy.
