you'll want to also define the DISPLAY environment variable on
the side you are running the application, for example:
        export DISPLAY="workstation.superfoo.org:0"
(if you are running X on screen0, which you probably are...)
if you are doing this over ssh, ssh can also do X forwarding so then
the export DISPLAY would not be needed.
