I don't think it is the fact that it is Microsoft as much as it is
the fact that everyone is using the exact same program with the exact
same vulnerabilities. If people were encouraged to try out other
pieces of software then this wouldn't be a problem.
This really shows the stupidity of a lot of IT solutions. At our
company, we have an official policy that everyone uses outlook. I
don't use it and neither does one other guy here, but most people do
because they are too scared of the IT people to do anything different.
Anyways - that kind of "one size fits all" policy means that when
something goes wrong EVERYONE has problems.
In a linux vs. windows discussion, linux is far superior with
regards to this. Think of it in an evolutionary sense. Linux
software is diverse population that can't be easily killed. Even if
you find a weakness in some part of the population you still can't
kill the entire population. Microsoft solutions, on the other hand,
are non-diverse population. When a weakness is found, the entire
population can be destroyed.
FWIW - our IT people shut down our email system this morning due to
their shortsightedness. Unfortunately they will view this is a
weakness in virus scanning on incoming email and institute a hundred
new policies to deal with things like this in the future. What they
won't do is diversify, which is the only way to truly prevent these
kinds of problems.
