I've configured VMWare to run win98, I've set up all of my devices. I
have a partition formatted and ready for windows, and a $5 win98 CD in
my CDROM drive -- one of the win98 CDs from the campus computer store
which I bought about a year ago. I'm using a Creative DXR3 which works
fine under Linux, and I've booted off of this win98 cd before IIRC.
Anyhow, I run VMWare and power on the virtual machine. It starts
loading, and I can hear the heavy vibrations that the CDROM drive
makes as it powers up. But, I receive an 'Operating system not found'
error.
So, as per someone's advice, I press F2 to load the BIOS when I power
up the machine. The setup menu appears, and I arrow over to the boot
devices. All of them have +'s beside them, except for my CD/DVD ROM. I
use + to move the CD to the top, then I save my settings. But, this
still doesn't help, and my CDROM reappears near the bottom of the list
when I go into the BIOS again.
Here is what I've managed to gleam out of win98.log concerning CDROMs:
Jun 06 21:35:47: DICT ide1:0.present = TRUE
Jun 06 21:35:47: DICT ide1:0.fileName = /dev/cdrom
Jun 06 21:35:47: DICT ide1:0.deviceType = atapi-cdrom
Jun 06 21:35:47: DICT ide1:0.startConnected = TRUE
. . .
Jun 06 21:35:47: Forking AIO IDE1:0 pid=2140 sharedArea=0x4001c000 size=0x2000
Jun 06 21:35:47: ATAPI_CDROM: cdrom.modeSenseInterval=8
After examining win98.nvram, wich is apparently where the virtual BIOS
settings are stored, I've begun to notice that the timestamp is always
updated to the last reboot of the VM. Is this normal? I'm wondering if
this is somehow tied to the fact that my settings for the boot devices
aren't being saved.
I'm also killing the machine to power down; unfortunately when I power
up, my mouse no longer works. Is there a keyboard command for powering down?
Any help on this would be appreciated; I have no clue what the problem
might be. Thanks.
