A quick search shows you can probably change your .pinerc file to include
a line like:
nntp-server=yournewsserver.com/user=username
and be prompted for the password by pine. No idea if that actually works.
I have always been a trn user. Version 3.6 doesn't have authentication,
but the 4.0 test versions do and I have been using them for a couple of
years. http://freshmeat.net has links to trn. Also, tin should allow you
to set up user/password pairs (I think in the .newsauth file), check the
man page. Other possibilities include slrn and gnus.
