Apparently SIGLinux can't just remain a peer forum for all linux and
some non-linux topics with someone actual get togethers on the side.
After putting together the many suggestions given to me in the past
few weeks mostly the past few days, I have a pretty good idea of what
other things I want to see out of SIGLinux: a lot of Outreach to the
General Masses. AKA Linux Evangelism.
To get there, the following is a Q&D list of simple things to do.
Bimonthly InstallFests(Entice the Masses):
I think its something to try. Either on a saturday or sunday every
other month. Besides, after march 5th, we'll have 11 lbs of SuSE
evaluation CDs to promote with. We are going to need something to
streamline the signup process, like a web-based sign-up form that
someone possibly still has laying around. also, mirrors of other
distros(who will most likely send us many CDs as well, but until
then)which I am willing to provide again(a little downtime for the
group won't hurt... too much) even though i'd prefer not to lug the
full tower over to the location yet unsaid. we also need some sleek
flyers and more shirts.
Regular meetings(Educate the Masses):
Since the list is a "constant General Meeting", Regular meetings
should be more specific. Like skillz training. More specifically,
teaching anyone who wants to learn about navigating and working with
the shells in multipart seminars on tuesdays perhaps. I really want to see
this one get followed through with. The shell is probably the most feared part
of linux and unix by prospective new users. So, they will be able to get
very comfortable before taking the dive or have a light to guide them
if they get lost along the way.
Technical Speakers:
This is something that is not really as important as the above 2,
but can draw in more people. There is potential for a speaker on
Compaq's clustering in the near future. If anyone else has any
interests in particular tech. speakers, connections with cool peeps,
or just happen to glimpse that someone is coming to Austin, get it set
up as best you can or tell me and i'll do my best.
Pure Preaching:
I've often seen the people in the west mall screaming about
hellfire and damnation and passing out bibles. So, i figure, if we've
got 11lbs of SuSE CDs to use, myself and others could go out and talk
to people about the benefits of free software.
The website needs to be updated with a FAQ or maybe even a FAQ-O-Matic
;-)
So, Very soonly I need volunteers for the InstallFests and the
seminars. I will find a day and room to begin these within the next
few days.
Let's get this show on the road,
Jeff Strunk
