I believe that it's because someone from not-America compiled LaTeX on
Slackware and the papersize default is A4 instead of US Letter. There's a
couple of LaTeX commands to change it on a per-document basis that I can't
remember. Fire up Klyx, make a "hello, world" document with the US Letter
setting. Then view the source to discover the commands.

I think you can also recompile LaTeX to get the desired effect. Or maybe
there's a latex.conf file floating around somewhere --it's been a few
years.

Cheers,
Robert Kennedy
