I used to think I was fairly competent at setting up PPP, since I was
able to connect to several ISPs easily in the past . . .

This summer I signed up for one of ev1.net's $10/month dialup accounts
and tried configuring ppp. While I am able to connect occasionally
without a problem, more often than not the connection doesn't go
through, and after lots of negotiation, pppd dies. Yet my sister runs
windows, and she has no problems connecting. I've tried chat/CHAP/PAP
with the same results. I let pppconfig configure my
chapsecrets/papsecrets and studied the results; it looks fine. To
simplify matters (yeah right) I just switched to chat auth, which
works just as often as the other methods. I've also tried wvdial.

Here is an example wvdial session:

--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.42
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 S11=55 +FCLASS=0
ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 S11=55 +FCLASS=0
OK
--> Modem initialized.
--> Sending: ATDT 8780710
--> Waiting for carrier.
ATDT 8780710
CONNECT 46667
PROTOCOL:LAPM
--> Carrier detected. Waiting for prompt.
** HTNT07 Terminal Server **
Login:
--> Looks like a login prompt.
--> Sending: noland1
noland1
Password:
--> Looks like a password prompt.
--> Sending: (password)
<pause of several seconds>
--> Don't know what to do! Starting pppd and hoping for the best.
--> Warning: Could not modify /etc/ppp/pap-secrets: Permission denied
--> --> PAP (Password Authentication Protocol) may be flaky.
--> Warning: Could not modify /etc/ppp/chap-secrets: Permission denied
--> --> CHAP (Challenge Handshake) may be flaky.
--> Starting pppd at Wed Jun 13 12:20:16 2001

The warnings don't seem to effect whether or not I can connect; I'm
using wvdial now and, since it uses simple auth, I'm guessing it
doesn't matter. Furthermore, running wvdial as root doesn't seem to
increase my chances of a clean connection.

Just as an aside, I have a 56k external Creative modem, and wvdial's
speed is set to 115200. ev1 is supposed to be 56k; any idea why I'm
connecting at 46k?

When I try using pon/poff, I get something like the following (Sorry
this is long, but I'm not sure how much is relevant and I don't want
to leave anything important out):

I did a google search, but didn't find much. ev1 has a Linux support
page, but it only seems to include basic instructions for Redhat
("Click this, then click that . . . " Nothing more useful, and they
don't support Linux.) Yes I know, I should probably switch ISPs, but
I'm only here for 2 months, and I'll be switching to broadband in
august.
