giving credit where credit is do is all well and good. but a name change in my humble opinion is ludicrious.
rms's requirement that the list change its name to accomodate his goals is invalid. this group focuses solely on the use of gnu tools, and non gnu tools on the linux platform and no other. if another group we to arise and create a large software base would we also be required to rename our kernel OLDE/GNU/LINUX or some other such nonsense? the fair use of rms and gnu's software products in no way require a statement of use in the title, its enough that any derivitive works are returned to the community not that the non community be aware of non use. the argument that users be aware that everyone using linux is also using gnu tools is immaterial. users who are aware of linux can hardly not be aware of the ever present GPL and open source stigma that follows it. simply appending the word GNU to the title of a users group mailing list in order to raise public awareness is pointless as well as ridiculous. while it is important to recognize and give credit where credit is do it is not proper to require that every reference to the OS be combined with references to the software that is running on said OS. while in fact we may owe more to rms for the usefullness of the operating system it is NOT the operating system. <flame> if rms could get his own kernel into a useable fashion he wouldn't have to try and append his titles to someone else's success. many of the kernel developers feel much the same way as linus and i in this contention. it would be nice if he would just concede the point and shut up and code. </flame> still apart from that, the list itself references linux, and software related to linux, if you were to append the term GNU to the list it might be expected, rightly or wrongly, that you offer support for all GNU projects as well, relative to linux, hurd, or not. i do not support the list change, mainly because i think rms's groping for public recognition is silly. open source was never about recognition, its about good available code. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
