So here's my predictament. I've got a linux machine back in my apartment,
which I use to share the internet with my roommates. i run samba internally
so we all use it as a file server for mp3s and what not. but when i go on
campus, i take my laptop (dual boot win2k/debian) to be able to do homework,
surf the web, check email, etc. i'd like to be able to access the files on
the linux machine back home, on my laptop on campus. i read up on nfs, but
from what i understood, nfs over tcp doesnt sound too stable, it requires
kernel patches and other things which make it seem like more work than its
worth. i've read up about cipe/freeswan/poptop but none of them really made
crystal clear sense to me. the concept sounds good but maybe i am just not
understanding the implementation. what are your recommendations? i'd like a
solution so i could somehow "mount" an export/share (whether nfs, samba, or
whatever) to my laptop on campus and be able to access my files from back
home easily that way. i've got a static IP on the dsl line, so the ip
changing is not a problem, and no ports are blocked by the isp in either
direction.

any recommendations/url's/etc would be greatly appreciated.

hook 'em,
jeff forman
