Removing IO-APIC from the kernel solved the networking and IRQ problems
(yay :)).

depmod -a and/or make modules_install did not fix the module problems.

As far as debian unstable, stability, while nice, is not essential because
I shut down my computer when I've not using it; an uptime of more than 24
hours is a waste of power in my case. Because of this, I'm willing to
sacrifice stability for updated software, such as Mozilla
1.1/Gnome2/Apache2/PHP 4.2/etc, which will probably take a long time to
reach stable.

It seems to me that using debian stable is a poorly optimized combination
of stability/performance/features/compatibility for non-server
applications. Although one might not be able to maintain a 2 year uptime,
I believe that most of the software in unstable is much better than
"testing" quality. I was using Gentoo before Debian with no stability
problems, so I don't think unstable would be any worse.

Anyway, thanks for the quick help guys.
