hi folks,

i'm having a slightly odd problem with my X setup. perhaps someone has
been here before and can enlighten me as to what exactly i'm doing wrong..

i just added a bunch of low-res modelines to my XF86Config file (intended
for use in DGA mode with xmame), verified that config file as the one that
X is using via the XFree86.0.log file, but the server doesn't seem to see/use
them according to same said log file, and xmame still chooses 640x480 as
the lowest resolution available. (btw, xmame does choose a bigger resolution
when it is necessary, so i am 99.99% sure it is working right). this being
a slow box, i can't really afford (cpu-wise) to scale anything more complex
than mspacman without making the games crawl, so i'm trying to fit the
resolution to the games rather than vice versa.

i've put the modelines all in a "Modes" section that was preexisting,
with the identifier Modes[0], and have a UseModes Modes[0] in my
Monitor stanza...but the server log only talks about the first 3,
640x480, 800x600, and 1024x768 (it is using those specific modelines,
rather than some "default" mode, since all the sync, etc numbers from the
file match up with what the server log says. er, actually, in that logifle,
it is finding a "default" mode for 640x480 since i commented that one
out for testing purposes. but i don't think that changes anything). the
other modes start on the next line, are syntactically correct, are followed
by an 'EndSection' and seem to be completely ignored (no messages about
modes rejected or invalid clock/sync range in the logfile, and i have
adjusted my ranges to very liberal numbers which the server does pick up, at
least if the logfile is to be believed.)

help?

i'm using xfree86-4.1.0 under suse linux 7.3, MGA driver on a PCI
matrox millenium II w/4M memory, in case that matters.

my XF86Config and XFree86.0.log are available at:
        http://home.w.tf:12345/XF86Config
        http://home.w.tf:12345/XFree86.0.log

thanks in advance for any sort of cluestick beating anyone can offer me.
